Christina Digiulio has announced her bid for governor of Pennsylvania as a Green Party candidate. She is pushing environmental issues as her top agenda item.

Just when you thought the list couldn’t get any longer, another candidate has announced their intention to run for governor of Pennsylvania.

Surprisingly, it’s not another Republican. Nor is it a Democrat.

Christina Digiulio, 44, is running for governor as a Green Party candidate and is hoping to bring environmental issues to the forefront.

The Chester County resident is a former analytical chemist for the Department of Defense and is the co-founder of the Watchdogs of Southeastern Pennsylvania and the Better Path Coalition. She got involved in politics as an opponent of the Mariner East pipeline.

Digiulio said she decided to run for governor after witnessing officials failing to provide basic rights such as clean air and water.

“The fossil fuel infrastructure in PA has become a hazard to human health and to the natural environment around us,” she said in an interview with the Green Party. “It has become a sinister system, which is protected by venal politicians.”

She supports the Green Party’s 10 key values, which are:

  • Grassroots democracy
  • Social justice and equal opportunity
  • Ecological wisdom
  • Non-violence
  • Decentralization
  • Community-based economics
  • Feminism and gender equity
  • Respect for diversity
  • Personal and global responsibility
  • Future focus and sustainability

Digiulio’s campaign could potentially take away votes from Attorney General Josh Shapiro, the lone Democratic candidate in the gubernatorial race.

Digiulio said she doesn’t disagree with all of Shapiro’s policies but that she wants to be the candidate that offers a different perspective than the usual Harrisburg political agenda.

The Democratic Party, on the other hand, said Shapiro’s track record as an environmental advocate is solid.

“This race is not only about protecting our environment, but also about standing up for women’s reproductive rights, worker’s rights, defending our democracy and more, and Josh Shapiro is the only serious candidate with a track record of fighting successfully on these issues,” Jason Henry, executive director of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party, said in a statement. “Josh not only has the support of environmental groups across Pennsylvania, but Christina has thanked him for his work on these issues. This isn’t the time for a vanity project because what’s at stake is too serious.”
