In a new ad targeting GOP conspiracy theorist and Pennsylvania gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano, The Lincoln Project is turning up the heat and saying the word that many Pennsylvania voters have been using in diners and coffee shops across the state: Traitor.

“Doug Mastriano is a despicable traitor who refuses to live up to our founders’ ideals or his military oath,” said Rick Wilson, co-founder of The Lincoln Project. “Despite the overwhelming evidence from the January 6th Committee hearings, Mastriano continues to push lurid conspiracies of voter fraud that defy reality and common sense. Just yesterday he hired one of the architects of Trump’s ‘Big Lie,’ Jenna Ellis, as his attorney. Together, they want to disenfranchise millions of Pennsylvanians and destroy America’s very soul.”

The ad is seen by many as the next step in a process of defining for voters what January 6 was all about: “treason.” This shift is likely in response to the evidence being presented by the January 6 Committee, evidence that is quickly burying the myth that the efforts to overturn the 2020 election were anything other than planned and coordinated.

Nothing was spontaneous. Nothing was a mistake, or just a rally that went too far. Everything went down exactly as it was planned, or at least that’s the argument the Committee is making in its presentation, and it’s using Trump’s own Republican inner circle to do it.

As the hearings continue, and everything from the insurrection itself, to the grift that funded it, are exposed, expect the language used to describe that dark day to continually shift as Americans and Pennsylvanians increasingly call it as they see it, and call it what it is.
