The best sushi spots in Erie, according to our readers

Erie, PA is not exactly the first place a person thinks of when it comes to good sushi. But over the past couple of decades, the dish has popped up in local establishments and grown in both quality and creativity.

No, our sushi restaurants are not using Lake Erie perch or whatever green seaweed floats around our beaches. So don’t fret! Through the miracles of modern transit, we’re able to get fresh ocean delights delivered with haste to fill the refrigerators at our favorite sushi places and then fill our bellies.

Erie’s small but sensational sushi scene caters to a variety of tastes. Whether you prefer classic sushi rolls or fun fusion dishes, the two best sushi joints in Erie have plenty to offer. So if you’re going to grab some maki or nigiri in Erie, stop by these restaurants to get your fill.

2. Bar Ronin

Bar Ronin nearly beat out our readers’ number-one choice as the best sushi restaurant in town. Even though it just celebrated its fifth year in business, this cool Japanese-style joint has earned a special place among Erie’s foodies. Their menu is Izakaya style, blending raw tuna, ceviche, and other delightful sushi-adjacent bites with modern takes on classic shishito peppers, ramen, and grilled meats.

The menu at Bar Ronin does not offer your typical spicy tuna or California roll. That’s not what this place is about. Bar Ronin is about serving up a rotating menu of Japanese-style bites with a modern American twist. It’s like a well-curated mixtape for your mouth. And since the menu changes seasonally, you can visit often and always try something new.

It’s also called “Bar” Ronin for a reason. The craft cocktails are worth the trip, even if you’re not cuckoo for Japanese-Asian-American-fusion. Not to mention the wide variety of sake, beers, and wine by the glass. It’s a great place to hang out, catch up with friends, and create new memories.

1. Samurai Kitchen + Sushi

Your number one choice for sushi in Erie’s is Samurai Kitchen + Sushi, and I can see why. They feature a blend of Japanese and Southeast Asian cuisines, including Hibachi, rice and noodle dishes, and even Pho. And for those who need a warm-up on a cold day when everything is gray and buried in seven feet of snow, don’t miss their specialty Ramen, available exclusively on Tuesdays. It’s a seasonal favorite that’ll warm you better than a heated blanket (supposedly).

The dining room at Samurai Kitchen + Sushi offers an intimate setting complete with a sushi bar, and their curated menu of beer, wine, and sake complements the dining experience. The staff is also known for being accommodating and friendly, with regular mentions of excellent service from satisfied diners.

Unlike Bar Ronin, you absolutely can get a spicy tuna and California roll here. But the menu is much more sophisticated than basic maki. The specialty rolls here really are special, using unique combinations that you won’t find anywhere else. The Hibachi options are wonderful as well — straightforward yet sophisticated and made with care. Here, you can throw down on some filet and seafood for a reasonable price (considering the portions) and leave full, satiated, and planning your next visit.
