Two bills limiting classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity, and a bill banning trans athletes from sports have passed the state Senate along party lines.
The legislation restricts transgender girls and women from playing scholastic and collegiate sports on women’s teams in Pennsylvania. A similar bill passed the state House in April.
Dr. Rachel Levine, a pediatrician who became state health secretary in 2017, is one of the few transgender people nationwide serving in either elective office or as a high-ranking government appointee.
