Opinion: It’s Kamala time 

In this op-ed, Bucks County resident Edie Sadek shares her excitement for Kamala Harris’ historic candidacy, believing that the VP’s disciplined approach and genuine care have the potential to lead the country forward and defeat Trump.

I heard about President Biden stepping aside when I was at home. I had mixed feelings upon hearing the news. 

I felt sad that a man who had done so many great things for our country for so many years had decided to leave the presidential race. But I knew in my mind that it had gotten to the point where he needed to step aside. Yet I also felt so hopeful in my heart that this change would mean a greater likelihood of defeating Trump in November, something which I feel is so essential for preserving our democracy.

Kamala Harris’s candidacy is historic as she is the first woman of color to (soon) be a major party’s nominee for President of the United States. I feel it is high time for a woman to be President, especially when it has been mostly men in power who have recently been restricting our rights, from reproductive rights to rights to privacy to voting rights and more. We need a strong, intelligent woman to defend our rights. And Kamala is exactly the person to do this. 

I believe Kamala Harris’s approach will be to address issues in a well thought out and disciplined manner, whereas Trump is undisciplined and does not aim to rely on seasoned experts, but rather foolishly feels “Only I can fix it.”  Many in my community, including me, find Trump’s statements repugnant going back to when he boasted on the Access Hollywood tape about how he can get away with “grabbing women by the p***y.”   He also mocked disabled people to laughter at his rallies and refers to women as “dogs.”  Many of us do not want a man of such low moral character and lack of discipline along with an inflated ego running our country. 

We live in a dangerous world with several wars going on and countries with nuclear arms capability.  We want a person such as Kamala Harris who has shown that she will be steady at the helm as opposed to Trump, who is impulsive and is preoccupied with prosecuting and persecuting his “internal” enemies. One of his chief ones is Liz Cheney, whom he is calling for to be tried for treason (which is ludicrous) by a military tribunal.  His other targets include a range of people in the Judiciary, Congress and in the media who have sought to hold him accountable for his poor judgment and lies as well as his crimes. 

We want a President like Kamala Harris who will focus on OUR interests and preserving OUR rights, instead of focusing on his own personal grievances, even to the extent of inciting violence for his own selfish ends. I believe in my heart that Kamala Harris will be a wonderful President if elected. 

I heard her speak at length recently at a Reproductive Rights event that I attended. Everyone knows that she is extremely intelligent and experienced in domestic and foreign issues, but moreover, after hearing her in person, I had a strong impression that she is a truly genuine and caring person whom we can always rely on. It was mostly women from the Philadelphia suburbs who attended the event and I could see that everyone was enthusiastic about her. 

I myself was inspired by her uplifting words to do my best the next 100 days to help her become the next President of the United States. I hope many others do the same so our country can start moving forward, and not backward, once again.
