More Than 1 Million Pennsylvanians Have Tested Positive for the Coronavirus Since Pandemic Began

The state has also recorded nearly 25,000 deaths.

More than 1 million Pennsylvanians have now tested positive for the coronavirus, according to state health data.

On Thursday, the state reported a total of 1,000,240 cases since the first two positive tests on March 6, 2020. That means at least one out of every 12.8 residents have tested positive for the virus.

Cases have been ticking upward recently, with more than 4,000 new cases recorded on both March 19 and 23. It had been 36 days since the state had recorded 4,000 new cases in one day.

Numbers are still down from the fall/winter peak in December when numbers reached as high as 10,000 and 12,000 a day.

How Pennsylvania Compares to Other States

The state, which has the fifth highest population, has had the eighth most cases in the country, falling behind California, Texas, Florida, New York, Illinois, Georgia, and Ohio, according to The New York Times. 

When accounting for population, Pennsylvania is 39th in cases per 100,000 residents.

According to state health data, 24,917 people have died from coronavirus-related issues. Pennsylvania is fifth in the nation in that number. It is 11th in deaths per 100,000 residents. 

Pennsylvania’s Vaccine Numbers Are Improving

After a rough rollout of vaccine administration, the state has shown marked improvement. During the second week of this month, it administered the second most doses per 100,000 in the nation. 

From March 9 to March 20, the state averaged more than 92,000 doses a day.

In total, 1.6 million people are now fully vaccinated and another 2.9 million have had their first dose. 

Philadelphia, which gets its own allotment of vaccines, has fully vaccinated another 183,918 people. Another 291,864 are partially vaccinated.
