PA’s pumpkin paradise: 10 of the biggest pumpkin patches to visit

By Kalena Thomhave

October 7, 2024

Visit one of these huge Pa. pumpkin patches to choose your favorite decorative gourd — and maybe even cut it from the vine yourself!

Pennsylvania is a pumpkin-producing powerhouse. In 2023, the state was covered with roughly 5,800 acres of pumpkins that totaled 90 million pounds of pumpkin production, per the state agriculture department. That lands Pa. within the top five states that grow the native squash we love to use as fall decorations. While many farmers sell their gourds wholesale to grocery stores and markets, others open their pumpkin patches to the public for pick-your-own fun.

Celebrating the season by visiting a Pa. pumpkin patch doesn’t only mean prepping for Halloween — it also means you’re supporting Pa. farmers! We’ve put together a list of some of the biggest pumpkin patches in Pa., many of which have acres and acres of pumpkins to choose from.

1. Mast Farms – Morgantown (Lancaster County)

Located in Pennsylvania Dutch Country in the Conestoga Valley, Mast Farms may be known for its legacy crop of potatoes, but it also grows 40 acres of pumpkins. The gourds come in a variety of colors, species, and sizes: the smallest pumpkin may weigh just three pounds, while the largest may push 80! While you can purchase classic orange pumpkins, you can also grab different varieties like “warty goblin” pumpkins (in case your jack-o-lantern design requires warts), white new moon pumpkins, and tall “Conestoga” pumpkins.

Besides the pumpkin patch, you can enjoy fall farm activities like hayrides and getting lost in two giant corn mazes. Mast Farms is open Fridays and Saturdays through Nov. 9, 2024. Admission is $17 for ages 3 and up.

2. Roba Family Farms – North Abington Township (Lackawanna County)

Located just north of Scranton, Roba Family Farms originally started as a Christmas tree farm, with pumpkin sales meant to attract more Christmas tree buyers. But quickly, the gourds took over. Now, Roba’s is a favorite fall destination in NEPA, with several fall activities and roughly 40 acres devoted to pumpkins! Visitors can take a picturesque hayride to the pumpkin patch and choose their own gourd for carving, cooking, or painting.

In addition to pumpkins, the farm offers a corn maze, live entertainment, seasonal food, and reservable campfires. Admission is $15.25 online for Wednesdays and Thursdays and $23.75 online for Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Roba Family Farms is open for the season through Nov. 3.

3. Seiple Farms – Bath (Northampton County)

Seiple Farms has been a part of the Lehigh Valley since 1889, and today, it’s home to 32 sprawling acres of pumpkins! You can visit the farm during the autumn months to pick your own pumpkins — as well as your own unique gourds and squash, like neck pumpkins. Plus, the hayride to the pumpkin patch is free! You can also explore the 20-acre corn maze, which is $10 per person, and enjoy rides and fall refreshments like apple cider.

Seiple Farms is open Saturdays and Sundays through the end of October, as well as most Fridays in October.

4. Banty Rooster at Ard’s Farm – Lewisburg (Union County)

Central Pennsylvania’s Banty Rooster at Ard’s Farm grows upwards of 18 acres of pumpkins each year. Now owned by the third generation of the Ard family, the farm is also home to fall fun like a corn maze, a slide, and yard games. You can also visit the restaurant the Banty Rooster Wednesday through Sunday.

You can walk to the pumpkin patch, open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, for $6 per person. Otherwise, admission to the maze and other fall activities is $18 per person. The fall season runs until November.

5. Mt. Airy Orchards – Dillsburg (York County)

You can explore Mt. Airy Orchards and its 15 acres of pumpkins this fall through the end of October. The pick-your-own pumpkin patch has pumpkin varieties for cooking, carving, and just putting on display! For instance, you might choose a tiny cannon ball pumpkin on which to paint a masterpiece or a distinctive orangey-pink porcelain doll pumpkin for your fall centerpiece. Or, of course, you might just go classic with the typical orange globe.

Besides the pumpkin patch, you can visit the apple orchard to pick your own fruit. You can also revel in autumnal fun in the orchard’s corn maze, on a tractor ride, or on top of a mountain of hay bales. Mt. Airy Orchards is open on Saturdays, Sundays, and federal holidays until Nov. 3. Admission for fall activities is $12.99 online. Entering the orchard or pumpkin patch is free—just pay for what you pick!

6. Port Farms – Waterford (Erie County)

Port Farms in Northwestern Pa. grows more than 25 varieties of pumpkins on about 14 acres. You can visit the farm for its fall festival and choose your favorite pumpkin after getting your fill of fall fun by finding your way in the 8-acre corn maze, taking a scenic wagon ride, or relaxing at the farm’s own brewery, Poverty Knob Farmhouse Ales.

The fall activities at Port Farms are open Wednesday through Sunday through the end of October. General weekend admission is $17.95 online, but discounts are available for weekdays, seniors, and students.

7. Olszanowski Farm – Spring City (Chester County)

How can one choose just one pumpkin among thousands? At Olszanowski Farm in Chester County, you can enjoy a roughly 20-minute hayride to the multi-acre pumpkin patch, where you can then search for the perfect pumpkin to cut from the vine. All pumpkins and gourds are priced at $0.80 per pound, while the long hayride to the pumpkin patch is just $3. You can also meander through the corn maze for $8 or the giant sunflower maze for free!

The farm is open weekends through Oct. 31.

8. Simmons Farm – McMurray (Washington County)

Just 45 minutes from Pittsburgh, McMurray’s Simmons Farm is home to five acres of pumpkins and several fun activities to help you and your family celebrate autumn. Unlike many weekend-only pumpkin patches, Simmons Farm is open every day until Nov. 3. You can take a hayride or walk the “harvest trail” to the pumpkin patch. Hayride tickets are $17 and include all fall activities, like two corn mazes and multiple slides. For $21, admission includes the hayride, fall activities, and any size pumpkin of your choice.

9. Linvilla Orchards – Media (Delaware County)

Linvilla Orchards is a quick jaunt from Philly for a worthwhile visit to the orchards’ Pumpkinland. The massive fall attraction is open every day for hayrides, train rides, mazes, pick-your-own apples, and admiration of more than 100 tons of pumpkins—all in different shapes, sizes, and colors! The public “pumpkin patch” is made up of those pre-harvested pumpkin displays, and they will wow you.

Linvilla does not charge an admission fee—you’ll just pre-pay for the attractions you want to experience, like the hayride, apple picking, or mazes. Linvilla Orchards is open for the fall season until Nov. 3.

10. Iron Mills Farmstead – New Wilmington (Mercer County)

This year, Iron Mills Farmstead in southwestern Pa. was named by USA Today as the sixth-best pumpkin patch in the country. The expansive farmstead is more than a pumpkin patch, as it offers more than 40 family-friendly activities like pumpkin bowling, apple blasters, and campfires, as well as eight food vendors. But the pumpkin patch is surely a highlight. Visitors can take a hayride to the patch to select their pumpkins.

The farmstead is open Thursday through Sunday until Nov. 2, with reduced prices on Thursdays and Fridays. Otherwise, admission is $24.95 online.
