Philadelphia‘s literary scene is about to welcome its next young voice of change and creativity. The search is underway for the 2025-2026 Youth Poet Laureate, offering an exceptional opportunity for high school students to become leaders in the city’s vibrant artistic community.
A unique platform for young voices
According to the Free Library of Philadelphia, the selected Youth Poet Laureate will work alongside Philadelphia’s 2024-2025 Poet Laureate, Kai Davis, and the upcoming 2026-2027 Poet Laureate, gaining invaluable mentorship and guidance. This prestigious position empowers young writers to advocate for crucial social issues through poetry while developing their artistic talents and leadership skills.
What the role entails
The Youth Poet Laureate serves as an ambassador for poetry and creative expression throughout Philadelphia. The position involves:
- Creating and implementing community projects
- Participating in city-wide events
- Promoting poetry’s role in addressing social justice, equity, and well-being
- Working with peers to expand poetry’s reach across the city
The Youth Poet Laureate will also receive a $1,000 stipend to further their education, and they will become eligible to apply for Regional and National Youth Poet Laureate contests.
Eligibility
According to the official application, interested parties must:
- Be a resident of Philadelphia enrolled in high school at the time of application.
- Not graduate from high school in 2025.
It is okay if you attend a high school outside of Philadelphia or receive homeschooling.
