Innovation in literacy wins top prize
Selected from a competitive pool of 150 global applicants, Barbershop Books emerged as the grand prize winner at the 14th annual Lipman Family Prize Award Ceremony in Philadelphia. The organization’s network of over 260 barbershops has successfully reached more than 15,000 children annually since its founding in 2013.
Alvin Irby, Founder and Executive Director of Barbershop Books, expressed his gratitude: “The Barbershop Books team is honored to join the Lipman Family Prize network of impactful, global changemakers. Winning the Grand Prize is a testament to the tireless efforts of our team, the commitment of our program partners, and the inspiration we draw daily from the young readers we serve.”
Runner-up organizations recognized
Two additional organizations received recognition and substantial support:
- BleagLee – Awarded $150,000 for their innovative waste management solutions addressing climate change
- Technovation – Received $150,000 for empowering girls through technology education and leadership programs
Barry Lipman, founder of the prize, highlighted the significance of 2025’s awarded initiatives: “This year’s winners exemplify what we look for in Lipman organizations—solutions that are grounded in community, fueled by innovation, and poised for growth. Barbershop Books, BleagLee, and Technovation are tackling complex challenges with creativity and care, and we’re thrilled to support their continued leadership.”
Comprehensive support beyond financial awards
Winners receive more than monetary prizes. The package includes executive training at the Wharton School, access to University of Pennsylvania resources, and opportunities for collaboration with faculty, staff, and students. Winners can also apply for the Lipman Nonprofit Leadership Scholarship at the School of Social Policy & Practice. Beyond the significant financial awards, these three visionary organizations will join a dynamic community of social entrepreneurs and gain access to invaluable resources from the University of Pennsylvania, amplifying their innovative approaches to literacy, sustainability, and technology education for years to come.
