The Tuscarora Lutheran Parish is launching a new ministry, the Community Closet, according to an announcement.
The closet will provide free clothing to residents of the Tuscarora School District and surrounding areas. It will offer a variety of styles and sizes for men, women, teens and children.
The Community Closet will be open to the public in the basement of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church at 8 Linden Ave. in Mercersburg Friday, May 30, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, May 31, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
More dates are being planned for August, November and February.
The Tuscarora Lutheran Parish is made up of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mercersburg, St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Williamson and St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Upton.
“When we decided a few years ago to join St. John’s, St. Stephen’s and St. Luke’s into a new parish (Tuscarora Lutheran Parish), one of our goals was to pool our volunteer resources,” Allison Zeger, TLP joint council president, said in the announcement. “We wanted to find new ways to connect to each other. Many of our members were eager to increase our visibility and service to our communities.”
The success of My Neighbor’s Bounty in Mercersburg inspired the creation of the Community Closet, according to the announcement.
“We hope our neighbors will use this resource to help them through hard times and then pay it forward,” Zeger said.
