According to the 2020 Census data, Pennsylvania as a whole added about 300,000 residents. That wasn’t enough to keep it from losing a seat in Congress.
Pennsylvania is the fifth largest state in the nation with a population of more than 13 million, according to the 2020 Census.
That’s 13,002,700 people smart enough to live in such a great state.
Unfortunately, the rest of the country is slow to catch on.
So slow, in fact, that Pennsylvania is ranked among the slowest of all the 50 states in terms of population growth.
Pennsylvania grew by only 2.4% from 2010 to 2020, while the nation as a whole grew by 7.4%.
The state’s slow growth has cost it a seat in the US House of Representatives. The detailed Census data released recently will be used to redraw the boundaries of the state’s legislative and congressional districts.
Only 23 of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties gained population. All but one of the 10 fastest growing counties are in the southeastern and south-central parts of the state.
The counties that lost residents were primarily concentrated in more rural areas in the north and west.

Thank you for taking the time to read our work. Before you go, we hope you'll consider supporting our values-driven journalism, which has always strived to make clear what's really at stake for Pennsylvanians and our future.
Since day one, our goal here at The Keystone has always been to empower people across the commonwealth with fact-based news and information. We believe that when people are armed with knowledge about what's happening in their local, state, and federal governments—including who is working on their behalf and who is actively trying to block efforts aimed at improving the daily lives of Pennsylvania families—they will be inspired to become civically engaged.
