After reaching a record-high price of $5.07 in early June, the average price for a gallon of gas in Pennsylvania continues to plummet.
As of Monday, $3.85 for a gallon of regular was the statewide average according to AAA, down from $3.92 a week ago, and $4.24 a month ago.
It’s still higher than the national average of $3.67, and 50 cents higher than the statewide average this time last year. But given where things were at the start of the summer, declining prices at the pump are a most welcome sight for Pennsylvania drivers.
The decline in oil prices is the driving force right now behind lower gas prices, with the Biden administration’s decision to release record amounts of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve also factoring into lower gas prices.
As gas prices have lowered across Pennsylvania, the steady drumbeat from state lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to lower or suspend the commonwealth’s .58 cent per gallon gas tax (second highest in the US, trailing only California) has quieted considerably.
Here’s a breakdown of the current average gas cost per gallon in Pennsylvania’s top 10 metro areas, with the average cost per gallon on June 9 in parentheses:
- Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton: $3.76 ($5.03)
- East Stroudsburg: $3.75 ($5.08)
- Erie: $3.92 ($4.94)
- Harrisburg-Carlisle: $3.86 ($4.97)
- Lancaster: $3.79 ($4.99)
- Philadelphia: $3.78 ($5.10)
- Pittsburgh: $3.93 ($4.99)
- Reading: $3.85 ($5.01)
- Scranton-Wilkes-Barre: $3.84 ($5.13)
- York-Hanover: $3.88 ($4.98)
