The Democratic US senator expects to recover fully with minimal disruption to his duties.
Democratic Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey will undergo surgery for prostate cancer, but is expected to make a full recovery.
In a statement released Thursday, Casey, 62, said he was diagnosed last month.
“While this news came as a shock, I can report that I have an excellent prognosis, as well as the benefit of exceptional medical care and the unwavering support of my family,” he said.
While he didn’t give a specific date for his surgery, Casey said he should be able to continue working “with minimal disruption.”
Serving his third term in office, Casey did not say whether he will run for a fourth term in 2024. He is Pennsylvania’s longest-serving Democratic US senator.
Casey represents the commonwealth in the US Senate alongside fellow Democrat John Fetterman, who was sworn in Tuesday. This marks the first time Pennsylvania has had two senators elected as Democrats since the 1940s.
