These small towns in Pennsylvania offer plenty of opportunities for couples to have a Valentine’s Day experience that is both romantic and unique.
What’s your idea of a romantic getaway for Valentine’s Day? Is it an entire weekend at a luxury hotel or bed and breakfast? Is it a one-day trip to a quaint town built around an intimate dinner for two? Is it getting away for a day or two to get outside and explore nature?
Romance doesn’t always have to look like it does in the movies. All it takes to have a romantic getaway is being present with your partner and doing things together that you enjoy.
If you’re looking for a romantic getaway in Pennsylvania for Valentine’s Day, these small towns each offer unique ways to celebrate your love. They also make fun-filled getaways any time of year.
For the Outdoor Adventurers: Upper Black Eddy, Bucks County
Bucks County is known for its Delaware River towns, particularly New Hope. But drive 20 minutes north, and you’ll hit Upper Black Eddy where you can experience all the charm of a river town without the crowds.
If you’re looking to explore nature for your Valentine’s celebration, this is where you’ll want to head. Upper Black Eddy is the home of the 123-acre Ringing Rocks Park and its enormous boulder field where visitors can strike the rocks with a hammer (bring your own) and hear them ring. The park also has hiking trails and a waterfall.
As for the town, you can take a leisurely stroll or bike ride along the Delaware River towpath, popping into the Homestead General Store where you can warm up with a cup of coffee and fill your belly from their breakfast and lunch menu.
Have dinner at nearby Milford House just minutes away or stay in town at the Bridgeton House on the Delaware where you can have dinner and spend the night, waking up to breakfast in bed in one of their fireplace rooms.
For the History Buffs: Harmony, Butler County
A day of digging into history can be romantic as long as you’re holding hands while doing it. Harmony is a quaint village founded in 1804 that is now a National Landmark District. Harmony makes for a historically stimulating day trip with more than 50 preserved buildings in its historic district, along with shopping and dining in the town’s stores and restaurants.
After spending the day exploring history, grabbing organic treats at Two Fraus Bakery, and shopping for local handmade items at Harmonie Laden (just two of the many shops in the walkable town), couples can enjoy a romantic dinner at the casual Log Cabin Inn, which specializes in steak and seafood, or The Harmony Inn, which specializes in German dishes and serves local beers and wines.
For the Classic Dinner and a Movie Date: Wellsboro, Tioga County
Wellsboro could easily also be a destination for outdoor adventurers. It’s home to Pine Creek Gorge, often referred to as the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania, a wonder of nature worth visiting. But hiking and sightseeing are not everyone’s idea of a romantic time. Sometimes the classic dinner and a movie date is all it takes for romance, and the small of town Wellsboro can deliver that type of experience, too.
The Arcadia Theatre, a 100-year-old classic theater, is now a modern four-screen movie theater that retains the old-school marquee on the front of the building, the perfect backdrop for snapping a romantic Valentine’s selfie. The theater shows the latest releases, often with ticket prices lower than the big movie chains.
Before or after the movies, you can grab dinner at The Wellsboro House, a restaurant and brewery with a history dating back to 1872 or The Steak House, which serves steak, seafood, and pasta, a classic menu for a classic date night.
For the Snow Lovers: Forksville and Eagles Mere, Sullivan County
If snow is in the forecast for Valentine’s Day, rent a winterized cabin at Worlds End State Park in Forksville for a getaway of cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. In the nearby small town of Eagles Mere, head to the mountain top for the Tobaggan Slide, where, weather permitting, the local fire department builds an ice toboggan slide that flies down the mountain at 45 miles an hour. At the bottom, hot cocoa and a fire await at the snack shack, and Eagles Mere village shops are just a short walk from the hill.
For the Luxury Weekend: Farmington, Fayette County
Farmington has a very small population, with fewer than 1,000 people living in the town according to the 2000 Census. Despite the town’s small size, Farmington is still home to the 2,000 acre Nemacolin, a premier resort destination. The Chateau at Nemacolin has luxury rooms and suites. Also on site is the Woodlands Spa and Salon, perfect for some pampering. There are four fine dining restaurants within the complex as well as several casual dining spots, bars, and lounges. Another 25 acres of Nemacolin is dedicated to skiing, snowboarding, and a year-round pool and hot tub area.
On your way to or from Nemacolin, make a stop at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Falling Water home — located less than 10 miles away in Mill Run.
