Ahead of Election Day, Kathy Cook of the League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania shares a quick breakdown of what’s at stake on Tuesday.
The 2023 general election is only a few days away! On November 7th, Pennsylvanians will choose critical municipal and judicial candidates. This election will have a major impact on townships and boroughs across the state.
Voters may see local ballot questions depending on their county. Be sure to check your county’s election website or sample ballot to know precisely which races you will be voting for, then Check out Vote411, the League’s nonpartisan election information tool, to make your voting plan.
There’s lots at stake this election season! Voters will make their voices heard on several critical issues:
- Reproductive Choice: The League believes that reproductive care is healthcare and that all Americans deserve the freedom to choose their own healthcare. The State Supreme Court election is crucial in preserving reproductive rights in the commonwealth for years to come. Supreme Court Judges are elected for ten-year terms. Make sure you know each candidate’s position on abortion rights. Pennsylvania is the only state in the country with a Supreme Court seat up for election this November.
- School Boards: School board members make decisions and set policies for individual school districts. They have the power to raise your school taxes. They also decide on school budgets, buildings, infrastructure, and curriculum. Board members serve as liaisons between their community and the school system. Their decisions directly impact the education that your children or grandchildren receive. Make sure that the school board members you vote for share your values.
- Judicial Elections: Voters will elect new judges and decide whether to retain many others. For more information on the types of judges and courts, as well as coverage on the candidates, visit Vote411 and PA Vote Smart.
- Local and Municipal Races: Pennsylvanians will elect a slew of municipal offices, which will dictate how townships, boroughs, and communities are run. For a list of races and description of offices, visit Vote411 and Ballotpedia.
We know elections can be complicated. That’s why we at the League are dedicated to educating and empowering Americans to make their voices heard every election.
