Raccoon Creek State Park's beach opens for seasonal swimming in time for Memorial Day.
The Raccoon Creek State Park beach was the 41st Best Beach on Frugal Flyer’s list of 95 hidden gems, which was constructed from a survey of 3,002 responses.
INDEPENDENCE TWP. ― Hawaii and California are home to a treasure trove of hidden beaches, but a Beaver County beach was recently also listed in a survey as one of the best.
“As flight prices rise and popular beach spots get more crowded, travelers are turning to the kind of hidden gems that locals have cherished for years,” says Josh Bandura, co-founder of Frugal Flyer. “These aren’t your typical sun-and-surf destinations – they’re quiet, awe-inspiring pockets of nature where the signal fades and the views take over. Our survey shows a growing appetite for places that feel discovered, not designed.”
While there’s no boardwalk or saltwater fishing, Beaver County residents have enjoyed the secluded beach in Raccoon Creek State Park for decades as a spot for swimming and beach-like activities. The area around Raccoon Lake has sand and sun, but still has the backdrop of Pennsylvania foliage. After enjoying the beach, visitors can also enjoy the hiking trails and the wildflower reserve throughout the summer.
The Raccoon Creek State Park beach was the 41st Best Beach on their list of 95 hidden gems, which was constructed from a survey of 3,002 responses. It was the only Pennsylvania beach on the list and ranked higher than another local destination, Ohio’s Conneaut Township Park, ranked as the 73rd Best Hidden Gem.
Throughout the survey, the blog reports that respondents seem to be leaning towards quiet, secluded beaches and a rising popularity in lakes with peaceful surroundings. While the popular beaches provide a summer experience that thousands seek, these
hidden gems are popular with travelers looking to escape the crowds.
Where is Raccoon Creek Park located?
The park is about 30 miles from Pittsburgh off routes 18 and 30. It is a 7,572-acre Pennsylvania state park on Raccoon Creek in Hanover and Independence townships, Beaver County, PA.
