There are approximately 89.7 million dogs in the United States, according to a study from the American Veterinary Medical Association. In Pennsylvania, 3.41 million dogs can be found in the state, according to the AVMA.
A study from the American Pet Products Association revealed there are more than 68 million households in the United States that have a dog.
With each dog having a name that is often used in recall, praise or sometimes frustration, the question begs, what are the top dog names in Pennsylvania and the United States?
While analyzing approximately 80,000 data points from third-party pet insurance industry partners in 2025, the American Pet Products Association was able to create a list containing dog names registered from January of 2020 to February of 2025 which gave them the most popular names.
What are the most popular dog names in Pennsylvania?
In Pennsylvania, according to a study published by U.S. News & World Report, the top three names are Bella, Luna and Lucy.
The top 10 most popular dog names across the United States, according to the study, include:
- Luna
- Bella
- Charlie
- Max
- Daisy
- Lucy
- Coco
- Milo
- Cooper
- Teddy
Perhaps making it easiest on a new owner, on the usnews.com list of the top 100 names, the name Dog is at No. 53.
What are the most popular dog breeds in 2025?
In Pennsylvania, the top three breeds are labrador retriever, golden retriever and American pitbull.
PetMD and the American Kennel Club released the list earlier this year, and the top breeds include:
- French bulldog: The most popular breed since 2022.
- Labrador retriever: Affectionate nature toward anyone they meet.
- Golden retriever: Intelligent, loyal, easy-to-train, affectionate, great with children and make excellent therapy dogs.
- German shepherd: A highly intelligent dog breed, a German shepherd is known for confidence, loyalty and bravery.
- Poodle: All sizes of poodles have a reputation for being hypoallergenic dogs with a friendly personality.
- Dachshund: Most commonly called “doxies” or “weiner dogs,” dachshunds are known for their long silhouette, brave and energetic personalities and alert natures.
- Beagle: Most famous for their nose, which makes them a curious breed, beagles are also a loving, affectionate and active breed.
- Rottweiler: Loyal dogs who are eager to please their humans, rottweilers are said to be intelligent and respond well to positive reinforcement.
- English bulldog: Bulldogs are a popular breed with a laid-back attitude.
- German shorthaired pointer: Often utilized as hunting dogs, German shorthaired pointers are known for their speed, agility and endurance.
