Prepare to welcome the “Year of the Horse,” with many ways to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

Tied to the first new moon, Lunar New Year falls sometime between mid-January and mid-February in Western calendars. This year it begins Tuesday, Feb. 17.

The holiday is celebrated by more than 2 billion people all over the world among many Asian cultures. Since the origin of Lunar New Year spans several countries — including China, Korea, Singapore, Vietnam, Taiwan, Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Mauritius, Macau and Cambodia — traditions around the holiday vary widely across each culture.

The year 2026 will be the Year of the Horse, specifically the Fire Horse, symbolizing “energy, freedom, and forward momentum,” according to Asia Society Texas. The horse is also synonymous with strength, grace and determination, and this zodiac sign serves as a powerful symbol of perseverance, freedom and momentum for the upcoming lunar cycle.

Traditionally regarded as an emblem of confidence and forward motion, the Year of the Horse indicates a period defined by significant opportunity and success.

How many days Lunar New Year is celebrated also varies depending on the culture.

In South Korea, Lunar New Year is called Seollal and lasts for three days. In Vietnam, the tradition is referred to as Tết Nguyên Đán, a week-long celebration. Chinese New Year is celebrated for 15 days, ending with the Lantern Festival on March 3.
