Eggs are tastier, better for the environment, and better for chickens when you source them straight from a NEPA farm.

The cartons upon cartons of eggs in the grocery store may have hazy origins, no matter what the labels say. If a carton is labeled “cage-free,” there may not be cages, but hens could be so crowded they’re living on top of each other. Industrial egg facilities also have significant impacts on the environment in terms of greenhouse gas emissions.

However, by buying eggs straight from the farm, you can get to know the farmer who sells your eggs. You can learn more about how the eggs in your fridge get from farm to table, all while supporting local growers and local businesses. And, you can be sure that local hens are treated much better than chickens on industrial farms.

Not to mention — farm-fresh eggs simply taste better!

We’ve put together a list of family farms in northeastern Pa. from which you can source farm-fresh eggs, often in a variety of colors and always perfect for a hearty, Pennsylvania-sourced breakfast.

Pocono Organics – Long Pond

Pocono Organics is a regenerative, organic farm located in Monroe County’s Long Pond. The farm grows fruits and veggies and also raises hens for eggs! Pocono Organics’ eggs are even “Certified Humane,” a designation for farms that keep to high ethical standards.

Miller’s Orchards Farm – Scott Township

The Miller family farm has been operating for eight generations! What a commitment to working the land.

You can find Miller’s Orchards Farm in Scott Township, located in Lackawanna County between the Endless Mountains and the Pocono Mountains. The farm’s eggs are laid by chickens that graze on open pastures — and these eggs, laid by healthy hens that can forage insects, seeds, and berries for themselves, are more nutritious than grocery store eggs.

Seasonally, eggs at the farm are much more abundant in the summer than in the winter, but the family farmers aim to provide eggs all year round. Buy them at the farm market or at markets throughout the area, like Co-Op Farmer’s Market in Scranton.

Wolfe Springs Farm – Honesdale

Wolfe Springs Farm is a family farm in Honesdale that focuses on organic and sustainable farming practices. The Wayne County farm offers a CSA (community-supported agriculture) program that you can join for weekly produce hauls and to get your family’s eggs! You can also purchase Wolfe Springs Farm eggs from the Hawley Farmers Market on Fridays or the Wayne County Farmers Market on Saturdays in Honesdale.

Endless Roots Farm at Overlook – Waverly

This farm in Lackawanna County’s Waverly sells eggs from pasture-raised chickens that get to peck about on fresh, new grass each day.

Endless Roots Farm at Overlook, previously Fullers Overlook Farm, has an online store for you to purchase eggs and other goods for pick-up, or you can purchase their farm-fresh eggs at farmers markets and other shops in the area. For example, Endless Roots Farm eggs are available at Everything Natural in Clarks Summit as well as the South Side Farmers Market in Scranton, which is open on Saturdays. You can also sign up for a CSA with the farm and add eggs to your subscription!

Dancing Hen Farm – Stillwater

Given its name, it comes as no surprise that Dancing Hen Farm raises hens that lay eggs for the community. The Columbia County farm has a CSA program for you to join in the summer to get weekly boxes of vegetables and eggs. You can also visit the Dancing Hen Farm stand at the Back Mountain Farmers Market in Luzerne County.
