The 5 best bars in Erie, according to our readers

By Stacy Rounds

December 22, 2024

I once heard a joke about my hometown, Erie, PA: there’s a bar and a church on every corner. While this isn’t technically true, there are, in fact, a lot of bars and churches. Erie has a robust bar scene, and that’s putting it lightly. Whether you’re looking for a laid-back evening with friends, a solo adventure, or a place where everybody knows your name, Erie’s bars have something for you.

Our readers have chosen their five favorite bars as “the best bars in Erie” this year, and each is different from the next. A lot of the bars around town serve as social hubs where people watch sports, shoot the breeze, or grab a bite over a beer or two. Others offer expertly crafted cocktails, a wide selection of local drafts, or bougie food options.

5. Calamari’s

Once upon a time, I started my first waitressing job. On day one, I spilled hot coffee on a patron’s lap and later tripped down the stairs, destroying an entire box of glass ashtrays. If your only experience at Calamari’s was during the summer of 2000 and you got coffee spilled on you or saw glass shards flying everywhere, that was my bad. I urge you to give this beloved Erie staple another chance.

Calamari’s has a ton of amazing draft beers and delightful craft cocktails, but the best thing about Calamari’s is the food. Between their killer sandwiches and homemade dressings, the seafood gumbo that’s still on the menu after twenty-some-odd years (and still tastes just as good), and the Calamari — of course, you won’t be disappointed with a meal here.

With separate spaces and plenty of tables, Calamari’s is also a phenomenal place to gather for a private party. The outdoor patio situated between two beautiful brick walls is where it’s at during the summer. The large building also has plenty of space for large events.

If you’re visiting Erie for the first time, I urge you to add Calamari’s to your to-do list. You won’t regret it.

4. Haggerty’s

There’s an upholstery shop across from Haggerty’s that used to be a residence. I once lived in that residence and often crossed multiple lanes of 26th St. traffic to frequent Haggerty’s. Ah, memories. But all sarcasm aside, I really did love that bar. I still do.

If you’re looking for a hole in the wall that’s borderline not a hole in the wall, Haggerty’s is your place. Patrons enjoy the gruff, genuine, and unpretentious atmosphere as well as the many drink specials, low everyday prices, patio, live entertainment, and the food — including some of the best wings in town

This bar has cultivated a loyal following over the years. It’s the place where everyone knows your name, literally. The drink selection at Haggerty’s includes popular beers and local brews, so whether you’re a fan of cheap American adjunct lagers or prefer to explore, you’ll find something to your liking. Also, there are plenty of shots to take if you’re celebrating or having a day from Hell.

If you prefer a bar bar over a pretentious yuppie bar, stop into Haggerty’s. Try the wings, stay for some karaoke, and say hi to Meghann for me.

3. Room 33

Room 33 is apparently not your ordinary bar — it’s a throwback to the days of prohibition with its speakeasy vibe and unique cocktails. Room 33 also provides the downtown scene with some killer music. So if that’s something you’re into, we suggest you give this place a try.

Room 33 is substantially more sophisticated than a lot of other Erie bars. As a former Erie native, I’m pretty thrilled that State Street has its own speakeasy now. It definitely has a cool, dressed-up vibe that’s perfect for a date, a bachelor party, or a girls’ night out.

If you’re planning an event, Room 33 also hosts private gatherings for groups ranging from 10 to 100 people. It’s a great choice for anyone looking to enjoy a night out with a touch of mystery and 1920s style.

2. Jekyll and Hyde’s

Jekyll and Hyde’s fuses old and new, with modern eats and craft beers, served within the walls of a century-old, historic downtown building. With a jukebox filled with modern tunes and classic crooners, you can set the vibe when you walk in the door.

J&H offers vegan fare among its options, but also serves up some pulled pork nachos and a massive steak burger. They also serve up some pretty killer rotating specials that local foodies love. So whatever you and your friends’ preferences may be, you can all enjoy a night of food, drink, and revelry here together.

Jekyll and Hyde’s offers private event options, making it a popular choice for special occasions. From birthday parties to corporate gatherings, the unique setting provides a nice, photogenic backdrop. The staff works closely with event organizers to ensure that every detail is taken care of, allowing guests to relax and enjoy the festivities.

Overall, Jekyll and Hyde’s delivers a drinking and dining experience that is totally unique. The creative cocktails, engaging entertainment, and attentive service make it a must-visit spot in Erie.

1. The Plymouth

I get why this is your number-one pick — this place has been around forever and has never wavered in its popularity. The Plymouth has built a legacy as a quintessential go-to bar in Erie, PA. The drink menu at The Plymouth is straightforward with a great selection of beers and hard liquor. You won’t find overly complicated concoctions here. The focus is on quality and consistency.

The menu at The Plymouth is also pretty darn good. It’s not fancy or thrilling or a foodie paradise for sure. But if you want simple, affordable, good food downtown, The Plymouth is a solid choice. I’m not sure I’ve ever had a bad meal or read a bad review. And anyone leaving a bad review on good, consistent, no-frills food needs to be designated a Karen for life. I said what I said.

Unlike some places that are either too fancy or too gruff, The Plymouth is just right. It gets five stars for its ability to cater to a diverse crowd. On any given night, you’ll find a mix of people from different walks of life, and from college-aged to retirement-aged, all enjoying the bar’s charm. It’s a place where you can feel comfortable whether you’re dressed up for a night out or stopping by for happy hour after a long day of work.

As you spend time at The Plymouth, it becomes clear why it holds such a special place in the hearts of locals. The combination of a welcoming atmosphere, quality drinks, and an inclusive vibe makes it a standout choice for anyone looking to enjoy a memorable night out in Erie.
