A beloved pizza and sandwich shop that’s fed Hanover-area customers more than 50 years announced its closing as the owner retires.

Sal’s Pizza & Subs, located at 1234 Baltimore Street in Penn Township, will close after its last day of business on Saturday, Nov. 28.

Owner Diane Coppola is looking to retire after 37 years at the Baltimore Street location.

“Thank you, Hanover,” the business said in a recent social media post. “Stop in before we go.”

Diane’s late husband, Sal Coppola, moved to Hanover with his brother-in-law, Jerry Malvone, from Brooklyn, New York, in the 1970s, with the pair originally opening Scotto’s Pizza at the North Hanover Mall in 1973.

Scotto’s was renamed to Jerry & Sal’s in the 80s, which then opened a second Jerry & Sal’s pizza shop at the Baltimore Street location in 1989.

While Malvone and his wife Rosa ran the North Hanover Mall location, the Coppolas operated the Baltimore Street location.

After years of joint ownership, Coppola and his brother-in-law split their pizza businesses apart in 2007, with Coppola renaming his Baltimore Street business to Sal’s Pizza & Subs in 2010 to differentiate the two.

Coppola passed away in 2013 at the age of 62, with his wife, Diane, stepping up to manage the Sal’s business for the last 13 years.

A real estate listing for the Sal’s Pizza & Subs business was listed online by local realtors on Jan. 8, 2026, sharing the opportunity to “purchase a historic Hanover restaurant,” with the listing adding that a sale would include all equipment to continue running the existing shop.

The listing was then updated in June of this year to decrease the asking price, with the listing then expiring on Aug. 31, 2026.

As the announcement of the impending closure made its way across social media, more than 100 comments were shared onto the post in just three hours.

Of those comments, many congratulated Coppola on her retirement, thanking her family for the time serving pizza to the Hanover community.

Several comments shared that they had memorized the beloved restaurant’s phone number over the years, which featured the business’ Baltimore Street address in its digits of 717-633-1234.

At the time of the announcement on Nov. 3, 2026, the restaurant displayed high praise across numerous customer reviews, showing a high 4.4-star rating on Google with more than 480 reviews.

The original business from which Sal Coppola spun his shop off of, Jerry & Sal’s, remains open after it recently moved from the condemned North Hanover Mall to a new location in the former Shultz’s Delicatessen at 900 Carlisle Street in February of 2026.
