Villa Maria graduate Kayla McBride had the game of her career on Sunday, Aug. 9.
McBride scored a career-high 43 points and shattered the WNBA record for 3-pointers in a game with 10 on Sunday, Aug. 9, as Minnesota beat Dallas 103-90 at the Target Center.
After the game, McBride praised her teammates.
“I’m just so grateful for this game and my teammates,” McBride said on NBA TV after the win. “I can’t say enough about how much they lift me up.”
“It’s crazy that I’ve been in this league for 13 years and when days like this happen, I realize I made the right decision to come back to Minnesota. We didn’t know what this team would look like this year but this place feels like home. I love the game of basketball and thankfully it loves me back.”
McBride, 34, made 16 of 21 shots to get her first 40-point game in her career. It is the 45th time a WNBA player has scored 40 points in a game. The record is 53 points, which has been done three times, including Marina Mabrey (2026), A’ja Wilson (2023) and Liz Cambage (2018).
McBride also made 10 of 14 3-pointers to break the WNBA record of nine. Chelsea Gray (2026), Rhyne Howard (twice in 2025), Arike Ogunbowale (2024), Jewell Loyd (2023), Kelsey Mitchell (2019) and Mabrey (twice in 2026) all had nine 3-pointers in a game.
McBride also moved into 18th place in WNBA history in career scoring. She surpassed 6,000 career points and has 6,013. She passed Seimone Augustus and Lauren Jackson, who had 6,005 in their careers.
Minnesota improved to 27-7 and remains in first place in the WNBA. The Lynx clinched a playoff spot and has a three-game lead on the rest of the field for the No. 1 seed.
“I just have overwhelming joy in playing this game and our team is full of resiliency,” McBride said. “We love our fans and we don’t just play for 40 minutes but we play for this city.”
