Luzerne County residents will be able to use drop boxes to vote in upcoming election

Luzerne County voters will have access to mail-in ballot drop boxes before the upcoming election after all. The lawsuit, however, may still continue.

A complaint was filed in Luzerne County last week after Crocamo announced that she would not deploy the county’s four drop boxes before the upcoming election, citing security concerns. The ACLU alleged in its complaint that the county had used drop boxes in every election since 2022, and that Crocamo did not have the authority to “unilaterally decide” against their use.

A Monday morning hearing on the ACLU’s request for an injunction — effectively asking the court to require the County to put out drop boxes — was canceled.

But according to a spokesperson for the ACLU, the case may continue regardless. The ACLU says the court still needs to answer the question of whether Crocamo had the authority to pull the drop boxes in the first place, which they allege was done without action by the county board of elections.

Neither Crocamo nor the Luzerne County elections board immediately responded to requests for comment.
