Gov. Shapiro unveiled a brand new design for Pennsylvania license plates and highway signs. Here’s what to know.
Governor Josh Shapiro has unveiled new Pennsylvania license plates and “Welcome to Pennsylvania” highway signs as part of the state’s preparations to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026.
The new “Let Freedom Ring” design emphasizes Pennsylvania’s historical significance as the birthplace of American democracy. The initiative follows the launch of Pennsylvania’s tourism brand, “Great American Getaway,” which aims to boost the state’s economy through increased tourism.
The first eight welcome signs have been installed in Adams, Bucks, Erie, Fulton, Monroe, Potter, Susquehanna, and Tioga counties. An additional 29 signs will be placed across the state in the coming months. The new signs and license plates aim to highlight Pennsylvania’s role in American history and its appeal as a travel destination.
The designs are also intended to complement the state’s tourism strategy, which has been identified as a key priority by the Governor. A recent report from the Pennsylvania Tourism Office revealed that tourism generated $76.7 billion in economic impact in 2022, supported 486,871 jobs, and contributed $4.7 billion in state and local taxes. The state welcomed 192.4 million visitors last year, many of whom will soon see the new designs upon entering Pennsylvania.
The new welcome signs are located at major entry points along the state borders, inviting visitors and residents to celebrate Pennsylvania’s legacy. Additionally, Pennsylvanians can sign up to receive email updates when the new license plates are ready for order in spring 2025. Information about how to request the new plates will be provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) at that time.
When the new plates become available, fee information and replacement instructions will be available on PennDOT’s website. Existing standard issue license plates will continue to be used until the new design is fully implemented.
