The Free Library of Philadelphia is embracing Pride Month with an extensive lineup of inclusive programming and resources celebrating the LGBTQ+ community. Under this year’s powerful theme, “Always Been Here, Always Will Be,” the library system acknowledges the enduring presence and contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals throughout history.
Pride Month celebrations across Philadelphia libraries
Throughout June, various library locations will host a diverse array of events spanning art, education, entertainment, and community engagement. Notable highlights include a Vogue 101 workshop with Jahad Martin at the Field Teen Center, an outdoor Drag Queen Storytime at Clark Park, and a special Pride Concert featuring the Philadelphia Freedom Band at the Parkway Central Library.
Creative programming for teens and youth includes the “Collage as Resistance” workshop and the “I’m Proud of Me: Creating Our Pride Flags” session, which provide spaces for self-expression and community building. Adult educational offerings feature discussions on gender and sexuality fundamentals and a panel exploring Philadelphia’s Black LGBTQ+ nightlife scene.
Resources and collections supporting the LGBTQ+ community
The Free Library houses the Gittings Collection at Independence Library, recognized as the largest LGBTQ+ public library collection east of San Francisco. This valuable resource serves as a testament to Barbara Gittings’ legacy in advancing LGBTQ+ rights and visibility.
Library patrons can access comprehensive LGBTQ+ resources through the dedicated Explore page, which provides information on health, activism, legal support, and connections to local LGBTQ+ organizations. The Rainbow Connection, an LGBTQ+ staff group, has curated specialized book lists to help readers discover relevant literature.
The library emphasizes that Pride celebrations are open to everyone, encouraging LGBTQ+ individuals and allies to participate in fostering an inclusive community. The library’s calendar has a complete schedule of Pride Month events.
