An Amazon Fresh supermarket grand opening in Bensalem on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2024.
The stories will close on Sunday, as Amazon plans to convert some of those soon-to-be shuttered locations into Whole Foods Market stores.
Amazon Fresh grocery stories, including locations in Bucks, Delaware, and Montgomery counties, and Philadelphia, will soon be a thing of the past.
The Seattle-based online retailer said Tuesday that it plans to convert some of those soon-to-be shuttered locations into Whole Foods Market stores. The company operates 57 Amazon Fresh stores. 15 Amazon Go cashierless convenience stores are also closing.
Amazon Fresh will close six Pennsylvania stores this Sunday, Feb. 1, including locations in Bensalem, Broomall, Middletown, Philadelphia, Warrington, and Willow Grove.
Amazon Fresh first debuted in the Commonwealth with its Warrington location in 2021. The Willow Grove Amazon Fresh store opened in 2022, followed by the Bensalem, Broomall, and Middletown locations in 2024. The store in Philadelphia’s Northern Liberties neighborhood opened just last year.
Amazon launched its first physical Amazon Fresh store in 2020 in Woodland Hills, Calif., touting it as a “seamless shopping experience,” by introducing added conveniences, such as its Amazon Dash Cart.
The company revealed on Tuesday its plans to open a “new supercenter” physical retail concept designed for customers to shop Amazon’s broad selection across fresh groceries, household essentials, and general merchandise. The company didn’t provide any other details including the timing of the opening.
Amazon also is testing a new in-store format called Amazon Grocery, which it launched alongside Whole Foods Market in Chicago. This concept at Whole Foods Market in Plymouth Meeting,Montgomery County, lets customers also shop for groceries and household essentials from Amazon.
Amazon opened its first Amazon Go concept in 2018 in Seattle, letting shoppers take milk, potato chips, or ready-to-eat salads off its shelves and just walk out. Amazon’s technology charges customers after they leave.
