Toomey, the only Republican to hold statewide office other than several judges, also is not planning to run for governor in 2022.
Sen. Pat Toomey has decided not to run for reelection or for governor of Pennsylvania in 2022, The Philadelphia Inquirer has reported.
Toomey, 58, of Zionsville, reportedly will serve out his current Senate term.
The Inquirer based its report on two anonymous sources who are familiar with Toomey’s plans.
Toomey’s office would neither confirm nor deny his plans. The senator reportedly plans to make a formal announcement on Monday.
Toomey’s decision comes at a tumultuous time for Republicans. President Donald Trump, Trump aide Hope Hicks, and at least three GOP senators have contracted the novel coronavirus. Their illnesses could hamper their efforts to install Judge Amy Coney Barrett on the US Supreme Court.
And the general election is just weeks away.
