Three schools in the commonwealth have been designated Green Ribbon Schools, a federal recognition award given to schools who employ cost-saving and performance-enhancing sustainability practices.
Three schools in Pennsylvania were recently designated as Green Ribbon Schools by the US Department of Education.
The Green Ribbon Schools is a federal recognition award that highlights schools, districts, higher education institutions, and early learning centers’ cost-saving, health promoting, and performance-enhancing sustainability practices.
Schools must show their progress toward achieving the award’s three pillars:
- Reducing environmental impact and costs
- Improving the health and wellness of students and staff
- Ensuring effective environmental and sustainability education
In addition to communicating school sustainability practices, the award uses a small number of honorees each year to share resources that all schools can employ through its Green Strides School Sustainability Resource Hub.
The following Pennsylvania schools received the award:
- Hillendale Elementary School, Chadds Ford
- California Area School District, Coal Center
- West Chester University, West Chester
