Make room, “The Pitt.” There’s another western Pa.-set series debuting Friday on Apple TV—one that was actually shot in western Pa.
The 10-episode drama “Nocturne” is an adaptation of the Lars Kepler novels “The Sandman” and “Lazarus.” It was created by John Hlavin and Rowan Joffé, who shifted the location from Scandinavia to western Pa.
According to the Pittsburgh Film Office, the series was shot in Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, and Westmoreland counties from last summer through late fall 2025. The website Moviewalks has more information on specific locations.
The series begins with a kidnapped teen resurfacing in the woods after three years. His abducted sister is still out there, presumably held by the same person who took her brother.
Authorities—including a broken, retired detective played by Liev Schreiber (whose western Pa. accent is just as good as the Boston accent he adopted to play the title character in Showtime’s “Ray Donovan”)—turn to Jurek Walter, a serial killer played by Stephen Graham who terrorized the community for years. But Walter has a very good alibi: He’s being held underground in a restricted unit of a psychiatric hospital. Maybe he has an accomplice?
Based on the trailer, it looks pretty good. I’ll definitely be checking it out. More details (no spoilers, promise) on the series below.

I hope you’ve been enjoying the responses to this week’s QOTW—What’s the best thing you ever got in your trick-or-treating bag and what’s the worst?—as much as I have. Here’s a few more to get you set for Halloween on Saturday. Maybe refer to them as do’s and dont’s…
“Neighbors would have a big pot of Sloppy Joes and everyone got a big, hot sandwich.” — Jim Arnold, York County (Ed. note: Wait, what?)
“The best was not the treat itself but the presentation. We knocked and hollered ‘Trick or treat!’ and a witch slowly opened the door. I think it actually creaked, but that could have been my imagination. In the living room she beckoned us over to a coffin with a crooked finger and pointed to the casket, then the lid slowly opened. This time it did creak, I swear! Dracula then sat up from inside the casket with a basket of goodies in his lap. Those of us that were left and hadn’t run out the door screaming, were treated to our choice of the goodies. The worst was a house that handed out prayer cards printed with scripture or images of saints. We learned to avoid that one in the future.” — Scott Kemmomgs, York
“The best was a quarter plus a snack bag of Wise potato chips—this was 1972 in Pittsburgh! That’s worth $2 now! The worst was a small Charleston Chew when I was wearing braces.” — Judy, Lansdale

I’ve seen some lovely reader-submitted fall foliage photos over the last few weeks, but this shot from Linda J. Ramsey in Bethlehem may be the loveliest one I’ve seen yet, due to its simplicity. One tree, three colors, against the backdrop of a perfectly clear blue sky.
SHOW US YOUR PENNSYLVANIA—whether it’s a gorgeous sunset or sunrise, stunning fall foliage, or something purely Pennsylvania, like an intersection with a Wawa at one corner, a Sheetz at another corner, and a horse and buggy parked outside a Rutter’s at another corner.
Send us your photos with your name, location, and a brief description of what you’re sharing.
