I’ve become fairly obsessed with real estate listings in my middle age, and not just the ones in my immediate area.
That would explain how I stumbled upon this listing for an island in the middle of the Susquehanna River in Luzerne County.
The property is called Wintermoot Island, and the asking price is $199,000. Located about a five-minute drive from Pittston, the island is named for Fort Wintermoot, which was located nearby during the Revolutionary War. Wintermoot Island also served as a winter base for members of the Algonquin Tribe.
The current owners bought it from the Pennsylvania Coal Company (two coal veins sit beneath the island) back in 1971 and use it as a fishing spot.
“It is the best bass fishing river this side of the Mississippi, and there’s good muskies in here,” co-owner Joe Vullo told WNEP.
Check out video of the property in this WNEP report.

It’s that time of year when the temperatures are dropping, the leaves are falling, and political attack ads are running more frequently than those Liberty Biberty commercials.
The last lap of each presidential and midterm election cycle features one 30-second spot after another where Republicans and Democrats are hurling accusations at one another. And in some extreme cases, parties even direct the attacks inward, as was the case during Republican state Sen. Doug Mastriano’s failed run for governor in 2022 when some Pennsylvania GOP members ran ads against their candidate.
With these ads pretty much running on a loop until Election Day (Nov. 3), we’d like to know:
Are political ads actually influencing how you think about candidates?

Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is a great spot for fall birdwatching. (Creative Commons)

Birdwatching is a fall activity that flies a bit under the radar, pardon the pun.
Numerous birds make their way through Pennsylvania in autumn as they migrate from their northern breeding grounds to warmer climates. You can see birds of prey like falcons and hawks fly through mountainous areas, waterbirds like tundra swans stopping in Pennsylvania’s lakes, and the signs of familiar songbirds flying by night through the woods.
October is peak viewing time for hawks and raptors, and one of the best places to watch out for these predator birds is Hawk Mountain, located within Berks and Schuylkill Counties.
Another bird of prey to keep an eye out for this time of year is the eagle. And while it’s possible to see bald eagles at Centre County’s Bald Eagle State Park, the park is an ideal place to catch sight of the migrating golden eagle, a relatively rare bird for the eastern US.
We’ve got much more on Pennsylvania’s great spots for fall birding—and what kinds of birds you’re likely to find headed south from now through December.

Maggie Merlino shared this photo of a bog near her home in Weikert, Union County, and said: “I take the same photo every time I follow this path, and it never disappoints.”
LET’S SEE YOUR PENNSYLVANIA—whether it’s a gorgeous sunset, sparkling fall foliage, or something purely Pennsylvania, like an intersection with a Wawa at one corner, a Sheetz at another corner, and a horse and buggy parked outside a Rutter’s at another corner.
Send us your photos with your name, location, and a brief description of what you’re sharing.
