In this op-ed, One Pennsylvania (One PA) Executive Director Steve Paul states that One PA endorses Kamala Harris for President, emphasizing her vision for an inclusive future while contrasting her candidacy with the authoritarian agenda of Trump and Vance.
The announcement of Kamala Harris as the official nominee for the Democratic Party marks a significant moment in this election season. While our organization, One PA, didn’t always align with every decision of the Biden administration, we acknowledge the pivotal role it has played in enacting some of the most important progressive policies of our time. These policies have had a profound impact, particularly on Black working-class communities, offering much-needed relief and support.
The Biden administration’s American Rescue Plan, a $1.9 trillion relief package, arrived at a critical time during the COVID-19 pandemic. This landmark investment provided direct payments, extended unemployment benefits, and notably reduced child poverty by half, helping millions of families navigate the crisis.
The following year, the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) was passed. This legislation aimed to reduce inflation, combat climate change, lower healthcare costs, and ensure the wealthiest pay their fair share. Additionally, Biden made history by becoming the first US president to join striking workers on the picket line during the UAW’s historic strike against the Big 3 auto industries. These actions reflect the administration’s commitment to supporting labor and working people.
On the campaign trail, Biden pledged to continue these progressive achievements, promising to end medical debt and cap rent increases at 5%. These are not just popular policies; they address the urgent needs of working families, as evidenced by recent surveys highlighting widespread support for housing and economic justice measures.
In stark contrast, the Trump/Vance ticket and their MAGA movement present a dire vision for our future. Project 2025, a 900-page manifesto developed by Trump allies and the Heritage Foundation, outlines a plan to demonize immigrants, initiate mass deportations, impose a nationwide abortion ban, and eliminate public employee unions. It proposes to dismantle overtime protections and disregard the national minimum wage. This agenda threatens to establish an authoritarian regime that prioritizes the wealthy while oppressing marginalized communities. Given Trump’s history and Vance’s corporate ties, this trajectory is unsurprising yet alarming.
With Kamala Harris now leading the Democratic ticket, One PA proudly endorses her for President of the United States. We see her candidacy as a pivotal opportunity to ensure a brighter future for all Pennsylvanians, regardless of their background, wealth, or residence. By organizing and voting, we can choose a future where our voices are heard, our power is respected, and leaders like Harris put our needs before those of the rich and powerful.
This election is a choice between two vastly different futures for Pennsylvanians and our communities. This November, we have the opportunity to continue the progress made by the Biden-Harris administration towards a fairer economy, greater freedom, and stronger families. Alternatively, we face the threat of Donald Trump’s dark vision, where the nightmare of Project 2025 becomes a reality.
Our endorsement of Kamala Harris signifies our belief in a leadership that prioritizes reproductive rights, supporting organized labor and addressing the climate crisis. Harris represents not just a continuation of progressive policies but also a commitment to true, tangible change. Our excitement stems from the potential to set a new standard for political leadership that champions our critical campaign issues, including reproductive rights, housing, and environmental justice.
As we rally behind Kamala Harris, we know the journey ahead is challenging. Yet, with determination and unity, we can secure a future where we all thrive. This election is not just about representation; it’s about obtaining real change that ensures a greener, brighter future for All.
