Erie, Harrisburg and Lancaster Airports Getting Upgrades Thanks To Biden Infrastructure Funds

US Sens. Bob Casey and John Fetterman announced federal funding for three airports in Pennsylvania on Wednesday. Airports in Erie, Harrisburg and Lancaster will be able to make upgrades that’ll improve safety and effectiveness for commuters. 

A trio of airports across Pennsylvania received a boost in federal infrastructure funding on Wednesday. The Erie International Airport, Harrisburg International Airport and the Lancaster Airport, located in Lititz, received a total of $17.8 million in funding to make improvements. 

The Erie International Airport will receive $2.4 million in funding from the US Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Airport Improvement Program (AIP) to help cover the cost of reconstructing the airport’s taxiway. Since the start of 2021, Erie’s airport has received $19.6 million in funding from the federal government. 

“This award for Erie International Airport adds to the consistent flow of much-needed funds to serve travelers in Northwestern Pennsylvania,” US Sen Bob Casey said in a statement. “Reconstructing the taxiway will make the airport safer and more efficient. A safe, effective airport means a better experience for travelers and greater investment in the region’s economy.”

On top of that, Harrisburg International Airport is slated to receive $9.7 million and the Lancaster Airport will receive $5.6 million in a mix of funding from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and grants from the AIP program. 

Since the start of the Biden Administration, Harrisburg’s airport has received $48.4 million in federal funding, and the Lancaster airport has received $10.2 million. 

According to a statement from Casey’s office, this funding will help rehabilitate the runways and expand the tarmacs at the two airports, making them safer and more efficient for passengers traveling to and from the region. 

“I’m very proud that this federal funding is going towards these airports in Harrisburg and Lititz,” US Sen. John Fetterman said in a statement. “This funding, combined with additional investments from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, is making sure airports across Pennsylvania can serve our local communities”

In July, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg joined Gov. Josh Shapiro and US Congresswoman Susan Wild (D-Lehigh) for the grand opening of four new security checkpoints and a connector at the Lehigh Valley International Airport. The project was one of the first in the country to receive funding from Biden’s landmark infrastructure law.
