Enjoy an excuse to eat pie — March 14’s Pi Day — at these Greater Philly pie shops.

Pi Day may be a day in homage to the infinite mathematical constant that’s necessary to measure circles, but it’s also a day for celebrating and eating pie. Because 3.14 are the first three and most well-known numbers of pi — denoted by π — Pi Day is March 14 (3/14).

You could spend Pi Day doing some geometry, but we suggest celebrating by finding some delicious pieces of pie around Philly. (At the very least, you should visit these great Philly pie shops in addition to doing geometry.)

We’ve put together a list of some of our favorite stores slinging pies, both sweet and savory.

Crust Vegan

Crust Vegan Bakery is a woman-owned bakeshop that bakes cakes, pastries, cookies, and more — all without eggs or dairy! You can find Crust’s baked goods at cafes and grocery stores throughout Philly, but the storefront is in Manayunk. At the brick-and-mortar location, you can admire a case of all sorts of baked goods, from sweet to savory, and of course, pie!

Pie flavors rotate by season. You can also expect to find miniature ice cream pies as well as homemade pop tarts (which are essentially hand pies, right?) at the Crust storefront. Check Crust’s Instagram to see what pie flavors they’re planning to make for Pi Day!

Stargazy

Stargazy is a British restaurant in South Philly that serves up rather special pies. But the British aren’t known for their pies, you might think to yourself. Ah, but they are known for their meat pies!

You can celebrate Pi Day in savory style by tucking into a small Stargazy pie, which comes in flavors both omnivorous and vegetarian, like beef and onion or chana masala. You could also preorder large pies — available in a wide variety of flavors, sweet and savory — to celebrate Pi Day with your whole crew.

Sweet T’s Bakery, Reading Terminal Market

Reading Terminal Market’s Sweet T’s Bakery is a black-owned business specializing in baked goods like cake, cheesecakes, and pie — but most especially pie. Sweet T’s is famous for their sweet potato pie, and their version should definitely be on your shopping list for Pi Day.

At the shop, you can grab mini sweet potato pies, large sweet potato pies, or a bevy of other baked goods (alongside your sweet potato pie, of course). Note that orders of large pies require 48 hours’ notice!

Little Susie’s

At Little Susie’s, you’ll find pie that’s a little different, but no less delicious. The coffee and pie shop specializes in hand pies! How convenient — your pie is portable.

You’ll choose from an array of savory or sweet selections, like cheesesteak pie or glazed cherry pie. And there are three Philly locations — Fishtown, South Philly, and Old City — from which to satisfy your hankering for pie.

Frecon Farms

Frecon Farms grows its own produce to bake pies featuring cherries, apples, berries, and more. Because everything is grown locally, different pie flavors are offered seasonally.

Currently, you might choose a pie that features apples, like an apple crumb pie. You can get your pie at the Berks County farm in Boyertown, or you can pre-order and pick up when the farm is at the Bryn Mawr Farmers Market or the Rittenhouse Farmers Market. There are two pounds of fruit in each pie!

Pie Bird Farm

Located in the rolling hills of Bucks County, Pie Bird Farm is a regenerative farm that focuses on pie. The farm’s pies are made from scratch with organic ingredients and local fruits so that each pie is a tribute to the state and the season.

Sign up for Pie Bird’s “pie line” to get an email when a pie ordering window opens, with pickup available not too far from the city, like at the Doylestown Farmers Market.

The Bakeshop on Twentieth

A small-batch bakery in Rittenhouse Square, The Bakeshop on Twentieth can meet your pie cravings as well as your coffee cravings. Choose from seasonal flavors like peach, apple caramel crumb, and cherry! Then, you can also order a cold brew or a hot latte to help wash down your Pi Day pie.

The Bakeshop’s pies are made-to-order on glass pie plates that you can return for $5 in store credit.

The Frosted Fox Cake Shop

The Frosted Fox Cake Shop in Mt. Airy may be, well, a cake shop — but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t bake mouthwatering pies! Indeed, the Frosted Fox makes all sorts of baked goods, including pies with seasonal flavors.

Pies to grab and go (or munch on in the store) are available later in the week, so it’s good Pi Day 2024 is on a Thursday. Call ahead before you visit to ensure the pie you want is in stock!
