You can grab fresh Pennsylvania coffee beans all across the state.

The local regions in Pennsylvania may be quite different from each other, but one thing done well all across the state is fresh-roasted Pennsylvania coffee. There are dozens of local roasteries crafting quality coffee with responsibly sourced and on-site roasted coffee beans.

We’ve highlighted eight of our favorite brands of beans roasted in—and available to buy or order—throughout the commonwealth. Whether you live in a small town or the big city, or you prefer dark roast to light, we’ve got fabulous Pennsylvania coffee roasters for you.

Pennsylvania coffee companies

1. Elixr Coffee – Philadelphia 

Listed first because they are my personal favorite (that’s the writer’s privilege), Elixr Coffee beans are roasted in Philadelphia. The roastery specializes in lighter roasts and supplies beans to its three Philly cafes as well as other businesses throughout the mid-Atlantic. Though Elixr is based in Philly, you can get them across the state—I get them in Pittsburgh at my favorite coffee shop (more writer’s privilege!), Kaibur Coffee. You can also order online, where prices start at $17 for 12 oz.

2. Monocacy Coffee Co. – Bethlehem (Lehigh County)

Monocacy Coffee Co. is a specialty coffee roaster in the Lehigh Valley. From its roastery in Bethlehem, the coffee company produces a handful of single-origin roasts from different countries—including Ethiopia, Colombia, Brazil, Guatemala, and Indonesia—as well as a handful of its own blends. You can try Monocacy’s coffee at its Lit Coffee Roastery and Bakeshop on Bethlehem’s Southside. You can also order online, where prices for a 12-oz. bag start at $14.  

3. Little Amps Coffee Roasters – Harrisburg (Dauphin County)

Little Amps is a celebrated coffee shop in the state capital of Harrisburg, where it has two locations serving its coffee drinks as well as baked goods and teas. It also roasts all of its own beans—the adorably named “friend blend” has notes of caramel, citrus, and milk chocolate. Plus, you can browse a mini selection of vinyl records at the shop. A 12-oz. bag of coffee starts at $19—but you can buy in bulk for less! You can also purchase Little Amps beans at local grocery stores and the cafes themselves.

4. Happy Mug Coffee – Erie (Erie County)

Happy Mug Coffee is a coffee roaster in Erie that, according to its website, is “trying [its] best to get Erie to understand good coffee,” explaining that most of the roaster’s accounts are out of state because restaurants in Erie usually buy mass-market coffee. The good news is that if you’re a discerning coffee drinker in Erie, you can easily support a local roaster. The roastery doesn’t have its own coffee shop, but you can buy its responsibly sourced coffee online; a 12 oz. bag starts at $12. You can also try Happy Mug at (more discerning!) Erie coffee shops, such as Ember + Forge.

5. Commonplace Coffee – Pittsburgh (Allegheny County)

Commonplace Coffee has provided Pittsburghers with excellent cups of coffee for more than 20 years. Today, Commonplace has seven coffee shops in the area, including two in Indiana (Pennsylvania). It supplies all of its shops—and wholesale customers—with coffee beans roasted right in Pittsburgh. Beans are sourced from around the world and are available in a variety of flavor profiles. Our favorite roasts are the special ones for which Commonplace works with a local organization, like the Sensory Nature Trail Blend in collaboration with the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy (with notes of fig, brown sugar, and red grape) or the Mixtape Blend made through a collaboration with local radio station 91.3 WYEP (with notes of cranberry, cherry, and citrus). You can buy Commonplace beans in shops or online, where a 12-oz. bag starts at $18.25.

6. Paroikia Coffee – State College (Centre County)

The in-house coffee brand of Sowers Harvest Café in State College, Paroikia Coffee, roasts its own coffee for the café as well as customers in and out of the state, promising Pennsylvania coffee that is grown around the world by farmers who are treated fairly. It sells single-origin coffee beans sourced from various countries, including Honduras, Guatemala, Colombia, and Burundi, as well as offering specialty blends. You can select from light roast, medium roast, dark roast, or espresso roast (and if needed, you can also choose your grind). A 1-lb. bag is $14.

7. Moka Origins – Honesdale (Wayne County)

Headquartered in Honesdale in northeastern Pennsylvania, Moka Origins is a unique coffee roastery for several reasons. For one, the company buys beans at fair prices from farmers around the world, including in Cameroon, where Moka has a local farm. Additionally, it’s located on the grounds of the Himalayan Institute, a yoga institute on 400 beautiful acres in the Pocono Mountains. Thirdly, Moka Origins also sells chocolate, meaning you can easily add delicious chocolate to your coffee order. Finally, it roasts a cold brew blend—enough said on that point. A 12-oz. bag starts at $18 online. You can visit Moka in person each Saturday for a free guided tour of the roastery and to learn about the chocolate-making process—samples included!

8. Fresh Roasted Coffee – Sunbury (Northumberland County)

Fresh Roasted Coffee is much bigger than most of the other coffee roasteries on our list. It has dozens of employees and sources more than 80 specialty coffees from around the globe. The company sells single-origin coffee, decaf, blends, flavored coffee, pods, espresso capsules, and even half-caf. Though it ships its coffee all over the world, Fresh Roasted Coffee roasts its beans right in Pennsylvania at its Sunbury plant. A 12-oz. bag of single-origin coffee starts at $12.
