I’m from Erie and I love Mexican food. But I’m one of those folks who’s lucky enough to have Mexican aunts, on both my mom’s side and dad’s side of the family. So guess who’s been spoiled with some fantastic authentic Mexican food?
Aside from the homemade Mexican eats that make me miss my hometown, one of the restaurants below was one of my go-tos for yummy Mexican fare when I was feeling the itch. While Erie isn’t necessarily known as a hub for diverse eats, Erie’s Mexican joints may surprise you. From what I hear, all three of these places are worth a visit. So I plan to pop in over the holidays and give at least one of them a try…
Visiting Mexican eateries in Erie means you can experience the passion and heritage of authentic dishes without traveling abroad. The welcoming atmosphere of all three of these eateries, combined with the rich flavors they serve up, makes for a dining experience that feels exciting — not to mention hot and spicy on a cold day. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, taking the time to explore these wonderful Mexican restaurants is well worth it.

3. El Canelo
Which El Canelo location is better? It depends on who you ask. I, for one, frequented the Peach Street location. But the last time I was in town, I supped on their amazing tacos on 12th Street with a good friend. While I understand that some think one location is better than another, I’m of the opinion that it is all very, very good.
El Canelo transports diners to a simple, traditional Mexican cantina. The restaurant’s lively atmosphere and comfortable seating are perfect for enjoying a meal with friends or family.
One thing I love is their fajitas, served sizzling hot and piled high with marinated meats and fresh vegetables. These are a crowd favorite, praised for their generous portions. Another dish that stands out is their enchiladas — the perfect dinner on a freezing cold day. The combination of these classic dishes, along with the welcoming environment, makes El Canelo a comfortable, approachable spot for Mexican dining in Erie.
2. Los Primos Mexican Store & Taqueria
Want to cook your own Mexican food? This place has everything you need to put together an authentic feast. Want someone else to cook for you? The taqueria has what you need to fill your belly and soul with warm, lovingly made food. Foodies, pay attention. This place is a culinary adventure.
Los Primos offers a unique combination of a grocery store and taqueria, making it a one-stop shop for all things Mexican. As you explore the aisles you’ll find more authentic products than anywhere else in Erie. And while you’re there, you can try their specialties like the tacos al pastor. It’s foodie heaven but in Erie.
1. Amigo Taqueria & Botanas
