Erie, Pennsylvania — known to some as a mecca for tax-free holiday shopping and to others as a tourist destination for lake-goers and sportsmen — may surprise you with its delightful dining scene. While it might not be the first city that pops into your mind for great food, (and it hurts our rep a bit that Peach Street is packed with chain restaurants) Erie has a wealth of hidden local eateries just waiting to be discovered.
Recently, we conducted a reader’s poll, urging local foodies to choose the best restaurants in Erie. These are the top five spots that locals swear by, from a cozy Italian bistro to rooftop dining and even Texas BBQ that has everyone talking.
Colao’s: Italian cuisine at its best
Kicking off our list at number five is Colao’s, a cozy Italian trattoria hidden in a residential neighborhood. This 25-year-old family-owned establishment blends a warm, homey atmosphere with modern versions of classic comfort food.
Colao’s menu takes traditional Italian dishes to a new level for an unforgettable experience, with handmade pasta, seasonal specials, and tender veal that practically melts in your mouth. The tiramisu is a showstopper, hailed as the best in town — with the reviews to back it up. And don’t skip the limoncello…
The Colao’s experience is not just about the food, however. It’s about family. Saverio Colao immigrated to the US in 1969, bringing his family traditions from “the Old Country” with him. Today, his family is still there in the restaurant, keeping a close eye on operations and offering guests a friendly greeting as they walk through the door.
Whether you’re a wine connoisseur or just enjoy a good glass with your meal, their wine list is bound to impress. This is one of the few places in Erie where a sommelier can feel at home. You’re not just going to find state store staples here — the wine menu is carefully curated to complement their seasonal meals.
Colao’s offers an experience that feels both upscale and welcoming, making it a go-to spot for Italian food lovers in Erie.
The Cork 1794: Contemporary American dishes
Coming in at number four is The Cork 1794, located in the bright and shiny West Erie Plaza. Here, you can grab fine wines, cutting-edge cocktails, and contemporary American dishes in a sophisticated setting. The restaurant’s ambiance is chic and welcoming, making it a favorite spot for locals and for visitors.
The menu is approachable with a sprinkling of upscale magic. And each plate can be elevated with a curated wine pairing. Whatever you order, you can expect a feast for the eyes — it’s all about presentation, from sky-high burgers to a tomahawk pork chop, and even the colorful salads.
One of the highlights of dining at The Cork 1794 is the carefully curated wine list, offering selections that perfectly complement the menu. And if you’re not a wine lover, they’ve got you covered with cocktail magic or a great selection of local beers. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply indulging in a night out, this spot promises an evening you won’t soon forget.
Firestone’s Kitchen: Experience turned experiment
Holding the third spot is Firestone’s Kitchen. If you’re a steak lover, this is the place for you. Here, Chef Firestone takes his 30-plus years of experience (including a stint at the famous Grand Concourse in Pittsburgh) and blows meat lovers’ minds with freshly butchered cuts cooked over an open fire with flavorful twists.
One of Firestone’s standout features is its menu of familiar favorites, elevated for a unique dining experience. Burgers and pizza rise above the norm. From the smash burger made with brisket, short rib, and select chuck to the pickle pizza with garlic creme and pistachio mortadella, you’ll find creations here that simply don’t exist elsewhere. And don’t skip the charcuterie boards here!
Every plate at Firestone’s Kitchen is a visual delight that can be paired with wine, beer, or a soft drink. And each day, you’ll find new specials to delight your palate. So if you’re going to make a day of shopping at the Millcreek Mall and loathe chain restaurants, Firestones is the place to be.
Oliver’s Rooftop: Seafood with a view
Number two on the list is Oliver’s Rooftop, one of the few amazing places where you can eat over the beautiful Lake Erie Bay all year long. Oliver’s, located on the 8th floor of The Hampton Inn & Suites on Erie’s iconic Bayfront, combines delicious meals with panoramic vistas, making every visit unforgettable. Whether you’re popping in for leisurely brunch with friends or a romantic dinner, the scenery provides the perfect backdrop for any occasion.
The seafood is the star of the show at Oliver’s. Regulars can’t get enough of the crab cakes and lobster pasta earning rave reviews and awards from readers of the Erie Times News, The Erie Reader, OpenTable Awards, and more.
Olivers also offers expertly crafted cocktails, so you’ve got a recipe for the perfect perfect night out. It’s not just about the food or the views. You can stay the night, play on Oliver’s mini golf course (during the warm season), enjoy their food truck, and sometimes even get a tour of the Brig Niagara. It’s the perfect destination for tourists and locals alike.
Federal Hill: The best BBQ in PA
Federal Hill clinches the top spot in Erie PA’s dining scene because of their meats. That’s it. No fancy drinks or renowned chefs. Just perfect BBQ.
Ironically located near Erie’s Little Italy on 26th and Peach, Federal Hill brings Texas BBQ to the far north. Earning the top spot for Best Barbecue in PA in Food & Wine Magazine this year, Federal Hill stomped the competition in bigger cities like Pittsburgh and Philly.
The menu at Federal Hill is both simple and experimental and full of first-come first-serve meaty goodness. It looks unassuming from the outside, and even the menu is posted on an old-school letter board. If you love BBQ, do not sleep on this place. Even some of the best Texas meats I’ve eaten in my life pale in comparison. And don’t skip the mac and cheese or the deviled eggs, either.
Federal Hill is the new cornerstone of Erie’s dining culture. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, make a point to stop in. Skip breakfast if you need to. You’ll need room if you’re going to make the most of this wonderful smoked meat heaven.
