Contrary to popular belief, not everyone watches the Super Bowl. Find out what some of your fellow Pennsylvanians will be doing on Sunday instead of watching the big game.
If it seems like everyone watches the Super Bowl, well, it’s because a whole lot of people do.
Last year’s Super Bowl between the Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs is believed to be the most-watched US telecast of all-time after the official figures were adjusted by Nielsen. The game attracted 115.1 million viewers — just a bit less than half the US population.
That’s a ton of people, to be sure. But that still leaves more than half the country doing something other than watching the Super Bowl. And with neither the Eagles or the Steelers playing for the Lombardi Trophy this year, maybe some Pennsylvanians will be less inclined to tune in (though there is that Chiefs superfan from Berks County who draws a lot of interest).
To that end, we asked our newsletter readers (subscribe here) earlier this week, if you’re not going to watch the Super Bowl, what are you planning to do instead on Sunday?
Here’s what your fellow Pennsylvanians said they’d be getting up to instead on Super Bowl Sunday (answer have been edited for length and clarity):
“Probably catch up on my DVR stuff and play some games on my phone.”
-Jason, Mechanicsburg
“There is a symphony concert at 3 p.m. and I will watch PBS later like every other Sunday. Don’t even know what time the game is.”
-Linda, Mechanicsburg
“I will be watching the Sunday night lineup on PBS.”
-Steve, Devon
“Reading a good mystery.”
-Janet, Hallam
“We’re planning on a scenic drive out of Lancaster on Millersville Pike. Then a long hike by the river in Columbia, followed by a visit to our favorite Chinese buffet in Fruitville!”
-Tom, Bausman
“I’ll be watching Six Nations rugby games on Peacock. The tournament includes the national teams of England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France, and Italy.”
-Brad Mills, Carlisle
“I hope to go skiing, if the weather cooperates, like we have many many times. It is one of the least crowded days on the slopes.”
-Judy Vose, Lansdale
“I have attended many a Super Bowl party and never watched the game. This year I will try to find some news and then check out PBS and Nat Geo Wild. I will then stream some things on MHz, Acorn, or Britbox.”
-Cheryl Peters, Harrisburg
“Since we don’t think the most deserving teams are advancing to the Super Bowl, my family and I are not going to watch. So, what to do? Take a nap, wash my car, or go to the grocery store. Anything will be better than the Swift/Kelce/Mahomes show.”
-Jackie E., Pittsburgh
“Don’t watch sports, so we will not be watching the Super Bowl. Other than going to church, we don’t have any plans.”
-Bob and Marsha Viselli, Greenville
“I plan to sew on Super Bowl Sunday.”
-Nelda, Central Pennsylvania
