With the start of the summer months just around the corner, utility companies Pennsylvania are raising their electric rates starting Monday, June 1.

Since President Donald Trump started his second term at the beginning of last year, Climate Power reports energy costs have increased by 15% in Pennsylvania, and as much as 18% across the country

“Pennsylvania families are getting hit with another round of electric bill hikes—and these increases don’t happen in a vacuum. They’re the direct result of policy priorities and votes in Washington,” Abby Coxx, Pennsylvania state director for Climate Power, said in a statement.

She added, “utility rates have gone up 18% nationwide under President Trump. The Trump Administration’s reckless decisions—and the members of Pennsylvania’s congressional delegation who backed them—have made it harder to bring cheaper clean energy online and easier for costs to get passed on to working people.”

Experts with the Pennsylvania Utilities Commission (PUC) warn that extreme heat in the upcoming summer months can quickly raise your electric bill as people turn on their air conditioners for long periods of time.

Throughout Pennsylvania, all 11 electric companies that provide service to millions of households and businesses across the commonwealth raised their rates with this latest round of increases, and this has lawmakers in Harrisburg worried.

”Everybody’s utility bill for their home keeps going up, up and up, and a lot of people are already having a really hard time paying their utility bills. We are not even into the hottest, longest stretches of the summer when folks will need air conditioning to be healthy and safe in their homes,” State Rep. Elizbaeth Fiedler (D-Philadelphia), chair of the Pennsylvania House Energy Committee, told The Keystone.

Last month, Fiedler introduced legislation that would target profits from utility companies after they fill their coffers from rate increases.

“ This legislation really calls on companies, on utility corporations, to really respect the struggles that people are having right now and not have their bills be any higher than they have to be to provide safe and reliable service,” Fiedler added.
